SIMULATION

SIMULATION is a problem solving technique through trial and error. This technique consists in emulating the behaviour of a physical system through a series of calculations; this process becomes, in a certain way, a virtual experiment: the underlying idea is to provide the means to test the consequences of certain decision through computation rather than in reality.

   
 

 

 

Every engineer utilises simulation consciously or unconsciously. This is often performed with an Excel spreadsheet which makes it possible to predict the chain of consequences of a given decision or choice, by performing more or less complex computations. Nevertheless, it becomes clear that, beyond a certain level of complexity, the spreadsheet is not enough of a tool anymore…
